DC Motor Problems

Troubleshoot your DC Motor

We work with customers across an array of sectors. The factory floor isn’t necessarily the best place to maintain machinery.

Your DC motor is likely exposed to extreme temperatures, moisture, overheating, dirt, dust, flashover, vibrations and electrical overloads.

More specific to DC motors are issues like carbon brush wear, carbon dust and commutator wear. Whatever the issue, we will solve it.

Carbon Brush Wear

Carbon brushes can be found in every DC motor, as well as other power generators and welding generators. The brush is self-lubricating, reduces wear on the commutator and transfers electricity from outside the motor to the centre.

  • Installed incorrectly
  • Wrong size brush fitted to the motor

Carbon Dust

The more DC motors are used, the more graphite and other components build up. Building up, it can have adverse effects on a motor’s performance and health issues for staff.

We recommend operators check motors regularly if trained to do so. If any excessive vibrations or noises are noted, it may mean there is an issue like carbon dust build-up.

Commutator Wear

Commutator wear occurs for various reasons. In use, the friction of the segments and brushes causes the commutator to wear.

If you notice the slot bar burning, threading or grooving, motor failure may be imminent.

  • Issues with the commutator
  • Brushes not shaped to fit the arc

If you notice the motor is on and off during operation or has decreased in power, it is likely an issue above has occurred.

Other Motors

DC motor repairs aren’t all we do. Kontroltek’s motors team works on electric motors, AC motors, DC motors, servo motors, soft starts and stepper motors — as well as squirrel cage motors and even hydraulic pumps.

We carry out efficient, fast and clean motor rewinds for manufacturers too.

On-Site Support

For standard repairs, we provide a free collection and quote. Once given the go-ahead, engineers repair, test and return parts within 10 days.

Alternatively, take advantage of an inexpensive emergency repair. We’ll get you up and running again 1-3 days.

Manufacturers often have us on-site too. This way a Kontroltek engineer can look at the whole machine and not just an individual part. They may be able to carry out the DC motor repair within hours or at least find the fault, wherever it may be occurring.

Motor Rewinds

Rewinding a motor is much more complex than just repairing it. Kontroltek engineers will remove the original winding of the motor’s stator and replace them with new coils.

You may need a motor rewind if your motor isn’t turning on, its emitting excessive noise or vibration, its shooting sparks or the motor’s carbon brushes are wearing out more frequently.

“A pump/motor unit that supplies our largest and most time crucial production line failed late on a Friday night. I called Kontroltek at 8:30 am on Saturday and they opened their premises… By midday, it was stripped, ready to be rewound and fully overhauled. If it weren’t for suppliers [that] held them up, they would have had it back to us inside 24 hours. I ended up having it delivered on site Monday afternoon.”

“Also, worth noting they were the only one out of six companies that answered the phone. Brilliant, friendly service every step of the way. Can’t recommend enough.”
