Types of Drives

DC Drive

This is the oldest type of drive. They work specifically with DC motors. These have mainly been replaced by newer technologies.

Kontroltek specialise in obsolete technology.

Stepper Drive

Stepper drives, or stepper motor drivers, work specifically with stepper motors. Stepper drives work by sending current through various phases in pulses to the motor.

A stepper drive can have an input of DC or AC.

Servo Drive

A servo drive is responsible for powering a servo motor. They use positional feedback to provide the motor with a high-calibre precision, speed and motion control.

Servo drives can have inputs of either analogue or digital.

Spindle Drive

Spindle drives can vary the frequency and voltage to operate a spindle motor.

The drive sends three signals to the motor: stop, at speed or a fault signal. Spindle drives are usually used to control angular motion to cutting tools.

VF Drive

VFD stands for variable-frequency drive. A VFD is speed-adjustable, meaning it can control an AC motor’s speed and torque. It does this by varying the motor input frequency and voltage.

VFDs have reduced energy consumption and costs compared to other drives. They are also more efficient.

Soft Starter

A soft starter reduces the input current and limits the torque. This is useful to protect your equipment and reduce spikes. The life of the motor is extended, and less heating is required.

A VFD can vary the speed of a motor, whilst a soft starter only controls the starting and stopping of the motor.

DC Drive

We repair DC drives every day, as well as DC motors. Kontroltek engineers specialise in repairing the old, new and obsolete.

Stepper Drive

Stepper drives, or stepper motor drivers, work specifically with stepper motors. Stepper drives work by sending current through various phases in pulses to the motor.

A stepper drive can have an input of DC or AC.

We can help with both the supply and repair of stepper drives. If you have a larger unit (kW), we can get it working again at a lower cost than replacing it.

A servo drive is responsible for powering a servo motor. They use positional feedback to provide the motor with a high-calibre precision, speed and motion control.

Servo drives can have inputs of either analogue or digital.

Potential Problems

Troubleshoot your drive

High current

Low voltage

Overheating or smoking

Worn or loose components

Faulty connection

Poor insulation

Corrosion of parts

Environmental damage

If your drive does suffer one or more of these issues, it will likely cease working. This means the machine it is in will also stop operating. Book a Drive Repair with us today.

Understanding Drives

There are many varieties of drive. And even more brands. Our engineers have rich experience, great knowledge and receive continuous training to ensure whatever drive comes into our workshop can be repaired.

As different series are released for different brands, our Research & Development Department constantly updates our testing facilities to ensure comprehensive care.

We also understand what’s important to you. We will repair your drive fast, do it for a fair price and warrant our work for 12 months afterwards.

Fast Turnaround

Kontroltek provides some of the fastest turnarounds on repairs in Europe. We repair, test and return drives within 10 days on a consistent basis.

Most competitors offer a 20-day turnaround on repairs, whilst OEMs offer anywhere between three to six weeks.

Drive Repair Testing

We repair all types of drives and test all sizes. As well as finding the fault with your part and fixing it, we test all other components of the drive to ensure there are no other problems.

We will also remove and replace all electrolytic capacitors in your drive. This means a complete overhaul of the drive, which will further extend its operational life.

Your drive will also be load tested on an appropriate motor and run with or without feedback. Various control methods can also be used to run the drive such as analogue, RS232/485, and Fieldbus.
