Diagnose Problems with Servo Drive

There are numerous benefits to installing a servo system over another power supply system, but it does require an experienced maintenance team to properly take care of the motor, drive, controller and feedback unit.

Below are some of the issues that your servo system and specifically your drive may have.

Overheating

Industrial automation and electronics in general are susceptible to overheating. Long hours of operation will take its toll on your machinery.

If the temperature inside your cabinet isn’t properly regulated, the servo drive and other electronics face the prospect of overheating.

Insignificant underperformance will eventually turn into noticeable damage and finally complete failure.

Don’t attempt to lower the temperature by operating with a cabinet door. That only exposes your servo drive to excess dust and dirt.

Monitor operating temperatures. Spot underperformance. Get your servo drive serviced and repaired before complete failure.

Servo Motor Won’t Turn On

If your servo motor isn’t turning on, it doesn’t necessarily mean that’s where the issue lies. In a servo system, the motor and drive specifically work together.

Check the drive’s DAC output (Digital-to-Analog-Converter). If the DAC parameter value is at or near zero, the issue lies with the drive and not the motor.

Noticeable Noise

Naturally, your servo drive will make a humming noise when operating. If the noise does become excessive, it’s possible that there is an electrical issue occurring. This could be incorrect wiring, for example.

As well as noise, you may notice excessive vibrations, temperatures and more either with your drive, inside a control cabinet or the connected motor.

Both operators and engineers should listen out for abnormal noises. Solve smaller issues before they become large ones.

Poor Performance

As your servo system ages, you can expect that the performance will gradually get worse. However, if it becomes too significant then you are losing out on what could be potentially productive hours.

It’s not enough to just minimise your downtime. You need to make sure equipment is performing at its full potential.

Monitor the system’s torque, voltages and ratings. If poor performance persists, consider getting serviced with Kontroltek.
