Kontroltek has purchased three more 3D printers to continue producing face shields to tackle the UK’s PPE shortage

Kontroltek has now produced over 1,000 face shields for those who need them in the UK. The company’s South Wales workshop has purchased three more 3D printers, taking its total to four, to ensure they can continue producing and help tackle the PPE shortage.

The company has supplied a range of recipients — including NHS staff, care workers, community centres, retail staff and teaching services. The company has been fulfilling orders both large and small, supplying people with protection from Bridgend to Birmingham.

The company received an influx of requests after a social media post went viral. In one email, a person explained that PPE was on a “first come, first serve basis” in his local hospital.

Andrew Follant, Kontroltek’s Managing Director, has explained what this effort has meant to him.

“It is honestly one of my proudest moments at Kontroltek. Whether I’m working from home or in the office, it’s been amazing to watch staff accomplish such a feat.”

“Many manufacturers are being forced to adapt and innovate, that’s why we have too. The addition of three more printers means we can speed up production, not slow down. I’ve always thought we were more than a repair shop, this confirms that.”

Kontroltek has been using STL files, which are in the public domain, to help produce their face shields. The company has used its resources to improve their designs slightly but encourages anyone with a 3D printer to get involved if able.
